Interwoven - Public Art Installation
Commissioned by City of Canada Bay Council, Murphy Reserve, Mortlake, August 2022
The City of Canada Bay commissioned Lise to create a public art installation utilising the ball fence in the reserve, exploring the themes of the river, connection and nature, while also considering the culture of first nations people, the modern vibrant community and its industrial heritage.
Interwoven uses the technique of weaving which is defined as, “to weave together threads, strands, branches and roots.” A medium which Lise felt celebrated the above themes. In a nod to the mariners of the past and present, marine ropes are used to weave together colours that are symbolic of the land and waters of Canada Bay, creating woven ripples along the fence line, while sinker knots float from the curtain above. The colours used represent the tones of the surrounding waters, the vibrant community of Canada Bay, and the rich and vibrant ochres from the land of the first inhabitants, the Wangal clan. On the short side of the ball fence, a subtle yet respectful reminder of the land upon which we play, “Wangal Land”, is woven.

about lise
Lise Hobcroft is a weaver and artist working on Wangal country in Sydney. Lise uses a variety of hand weaving and knotting techniques to craft cloth for domestic textiles, artworks and public art commissions. She produces most of her handwoven cloth on a 12 shaft countermarch floor loom and predominantly uses natural fibres and repurposed waste materials in her pieces.
She has a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts and a Bachelor of Teaching from the University of New England.
Lise formerly traded under the name of lidi gradan studio.
